Under the price increase, Pfizer would pay an average of $1 per pill, down from its current price of $7.50 per pill. The company would pay the same per pill price for its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
The price hike will be controversial because the price for Viagra has risen from $2.75 to $7.50 per pill. The company has already announced plans to add a generic version of Viagra to its market. Pfizer would have to pay as little as $9 for the generic version, down from $5.25 a pill.

However, a study published in the journal Science shows that a single daily dose of Viagra may not be enough to cause the desired effect, if it is taken for more than five years. If taken daily for five years or more, the risk of heart attack or stroke is increased by up to 50%.
The researchers conducted a comparison of Viagra and its generic equivalent, Levitra, to see which worked best for men with erectile dysfunction who were taking the latter in the first place.
They found that Levitra was as effective as Viagra, but that it was less effective than Viagra Connect. It was also as effective as Viagra, but only slightly more expensive.
The study also found that men who took Levitra for longer periods of time were more likely to suffer from heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol.
Dr. Irwin Goldstein, head of urology at San Diego Sexual Medicine, called the price "a major setback."
"Viagra Connect will certainly not solve the problem of erectile dysfunction, but Pfizer is committed to helping patients with erectile dysfunction get their lives back on track," he said in a statement.
